Two development teams are vying to build a project on a 5.5-acre parcel straddling the BART line at the West Oakland station, and officials of the transit agency expect to recommend one of them to BART’s board within weeks.
The site is now occupied by two parking lots divided by the BART right of way, and spans an area from Fifth Street to Seventh Street between Chester Street and Mandela Parkway.
Nobody at BART will discuss the proposals, but the agency has made it clear that it would look with favor on a transit-oriented office-retail project, ideally one that’s substantial enough to attract reverse-commuters and block some of the train noise in the surrounding area. Read more
